Position

Asterisk is seeking a seasoned studio manager/project manager to join our Austin team as we create brand experiences, help users navigate their surroundings, and facilitate interactions between people and the built environment. This person will act as a conduit between our clients and our studio to help ensure clarity, sanity, and profitability via clearly defined assignments, deliverables, and timelines. This is an in-house position.

We are a 22-year-old design studio in Austin, Texas. We work in 2- and 3-dimensional design venues — often all at once: brand vocabularies and identities, installations and exhibits, experiential graphics and signage, digital media and traditional print collateral. We have built our business thanks to solid relationships with clients who value and respect the work we do, and with colleagues who enjoy the staggering variety of creative opportunities in the studio. See our About page for representative client list.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Seeks a long-term career opportunity, not a time-sheet job
  • Can help operate and grow our 22-year old firm
  • Understands the creative studio process and how to structure projects from concept through delivery across platforms of paper, pixels, and the built-environment
  • Can lead us to new ways of working (in-office + WFH combo likely) via technology and processes
  • Enjoys working with creative projects and creative people
  • Communicates effectively, succinctly, and kindly via email, Slack, Zoom, and the phone.
  • Is detail-oriented, makes lists, and enjoys getting things done. Check the box people welcome.
  • Understands that we’re a service business that traffics in design, and that the best opportunities we have are those on our desks
  • Is proactive, supportive, empathetic, and mature enough to remain calm and positive

Responsibilities

  • Lead and track multiple, simultaneous project workflows for 2- and 3-dimensional design deliverables including signage, exhibits, installations, digital media, and print while driving all steps of the creative life cycle
  • Act as a right-hand to firm leadership in managing our day-to-day operations including matters related to strategic positioning, facilities, financial/bookkeeping, HR, events, and special projects
  • Manage creative team budgets including estimating jobs, writing and reviewing proposals, and opening jobs in our system
  • Participate in or manage key creative engagements and build rapport with our team and clients
  • Run our weekly project and workload meetings; keep job lists up-to-date and moving forward
  • Review monthly billing milestones and coordinate invoices and expense reports with team and leadership
  • Assist with new business development and presentations
  • Research and order materials needed for the office, project research, or our library
  • Assist project creatives with tasks such as creating production specifications, procuring vendor bids and contracts, vetting new vendors, securing photography and illustration rights, etc.
  • Review and proofread documents that leave the studio
  • Encourage and model office standards and procedures

Your qualifications

  • 4-year undergraduate degree from an accredited school
  • 5+ years industry experience preferably in a creative services firm with solid character and performance references
  • Proven history of leading complex projects with tight deadlines and multiple dependencies
  • The ability to adapt and change gears quickly, nimbly, and with a positive spirit
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google suites and project management and productivity software; familiarity with bookkeeping and accounting basics; use of Adobe Creative suite a plus
  • Active professional social media involvement including LinkedIn and Instagram, etc.
  • Outgoing, positive, interested in learning and contributing new ideas
  • Collaborative team player
  • Consistent, dependable, and conscientious
  • Detail-oriented, impeccable organization and communication/writing skills
  • Willingness to travel if and when required
  • Self-motivated with a mindfulness of time management
  • A devotion to responsive client service
  • Must like dogs (especially our office pup, Ruby, who is the best dog)

What we offer

  • Ridiculously fun projects and opportunities
  • A drama-free, collaborative environment
  • The opportunity to be a key part of our growth and expansion
  • Funny, talented, and collaborative coworkers
  • A strong foundation of clients who we genuinely enjoy working with and for
